Almost any upholstery-weight material is appropriate for all StretchWall Installations systems.

Acoustically transparent fabrics insure good sound absorption. However, latex-backed fabrics tend to reduce sound transmission.

Seams

For Classic StretchWall® and SnapLoc®, seams can be emphasized or de-emphasized depending on the wear on a fabric and its color. Seams disappear in fabric that is vertically directional. Seams tend to read as butt joints when the predominant direction of the grain is horizontal. With a non-directional fabric, seams tend to read more with light-colored fabrics less than with dark colors.

Butt joints

For 8000 Panels, joints between square-edge panels with a tightly butted thin fabric tend to read monolithically. Joints are seen more clearly between panels with heavy or thick fabrics.

Tracking and nailing

Heavier year texture best facilitate areas where pin tacking or nails will be inserted—for picture hanging and other requirements. Linen works well in art galleries because of its unobtrusive or neutral appearance behind artwork. Because linen is hardy and natural, a good appearance can be maintained through many exhibitions. Satins and sateen weaves are not recommended where tacking is desired.

Unbalanced fabrics

Taffetas and architectural silks—especially when flameproofed—are subject to great variances in expansion and contraction. And they require a consistently controlled environmental temperature to maintain stability. Thus, avoid their use in areas where temperature or humidity will greatly vary.

Balanced fabrics

Jacquard, damask and basket weaves—regardless of their yarn content—are more dimensionally stable and can be used in areas where great variances in temperature and humidity will occur.

Light colors

Some light-colored fabrics—especially white—must be checked assure that the wall construction will not ready through a fabric and change its hue. In these cases, the fabric may have to be lined for an additional charge, and the color of the lining may change the hue of a fabric. White will also soil easily. Take a fabric, and place it over one light and one dark colored surface. A difference in the fabric color will indicate read-through. If you see no difference in fabric color, there is no read-through.

Flameproofing

Some fabrics are inherently flameproof, such as panel-fabric Verel or du Pont’s Dacron. Others may or may not lend themselves to the flameproofing process. Generally, natural fibers—and many blends—can be treated without affecting a fabrics’ appearance. However, in some cases, prior testing is highly recommended.

Nylon and polyester usually cannot be flameproofed to meet fire codes. When flameproofing is required, a fabric should also be treated with a soil-resistor substance that is non-toxic (absent of PFOS, or perfluoro-octane sulfonate).
